ByK E-450x3i Kids Bike Features

Design:

With the E-450x3i frame we customised each tube to reduce weight and improve handling. Another crucial ingredient to the clever design is the improved control and bump dampening ability of our CRM forks - giving a dramatic advantage in handling and comfort.

Little details such as increased knee to handlebar clearance for growing bodies, a longer wheelbase for stable handling, and adjustable pedal position for growing legs, all make the E-450x3i a great entry-geared bike for kids. Durabilty is also a key factor in the E-450x3i such as the added extra strength in the wheels and the tyres.

And due to popular demand we are releasing the Commuter range in October 2015 which features an E-450x3i in Urban Black, with rear alloy rack and mudguards.

Performance:

We know that kids love the idea of gears but they give them a tough time! So we have created a model with the super cool SRAM i-motion internal 3 speed gears for those early learners who are still treating their bike rough but want to learn and play with gears. Our unique design offers a longer chain length, helping with chain flex. Then we use the direct pulling 1:1 SRAM gears - fantastic because every movement in the lever reflects the same movement in the derailler. Also, by using a cassette hub, we have eliminated cluster wobble and the demons of throwing chains off gears.

Safety:

To make a children's bike safe, the rider needs to be able to brake efficiently and confidently. The custom-sized V-Brakes we have used are calibrated for age, ability and ergonomic fit. And they are made of non-flexing, strong and light alloy. Our light weight alloy rims ensure pedalling is easier. But more importantly alloy rims are a more efficient braking surface than cheaper, chrome-plated steel rims, and are therefore safer.

Little Details Count:

  • True cartridge bottom bracket for straighter chain alignment.
  • Cassette rear hub for superior gear shifting.
  • CRM Forks for extra comfort and improved handling.
  • Long rear stay length for best possible gear shifting.
  • Super tough wheels for reduced maintenance.
  • Calibrated V Brakes for progressive braking.

How to Choose the Right Size Kids Bike

When it comes to choosing the right size kids bike, our over-riding advice is 'smaller is better than bigger'. Children learn to ride with greater ease, have more control on the bike and have a lot more fun if they are the master of their domain.

Our overall advice on choosing the right size kids' bike is based not only on Age and Height, but Ability and Personal Confidence.

It is all too common to see parents using height as the only key measurement for a bike's correct size. Be careful: it can easily be misleading as an indicator. As most kids' balance develops at roughly the same speed, using age with ability is far more relevant. If you can add age, with height, and ability (ability is a hard one to measure but as a parent you must be honest and realistic) and confidence, than you have a really good indicator.

A bike is the right size when your child can:

  • Sit on the saddle and rest the balls of both feet on the ground.
  • Straddle the top bar with a comfortable clearance and with both feet flat on the ground.
  • Reach the handlebars with a slight bend in the arms when sitting on the seat.
  • If there are handbrakes, your child should be able to grasp them and apply enough pressure to stop the bike.

The most common reason kids have to move up a size on a normal bike is because of the lack of knee room between the seat and handlebars. This forces you to put up the seat and then your child loses interest or confidence in riding because the centre of gravity is really high and hence the bike becomes even more difficult to ride.

ByK bikes have more knee room than other bikes, which helps to lengthen the life of the bike and make the bike handle in a more predictable way.
